The Power of Pride
In early June my best friend and I had a lengthy discussion around the role of Gay Pride in today’s society. He proposed that Pride still had a every important position in gay culture. I thought the celebration had its day and was grasping on to relevancy.
Then the Supreme Court ruling happened.
As you grow older you assume the role of elder statesmen in your circles. Celebrations, anniversaries and events cease to be about you. Your role is to help support the next generation emerge into their own.
The Supreme Court ruling reminded me that as long as there are people with internalized homophobia or people who need something larger to latch on to, Pride has a place.
The Supreme Court ruling came down. And our community rallied. Town centers, bars and ad hoc social venues became meeting places o politics, bodies and happiness.
So Happy Pride everyone. Go Big or Go Home.
