Gay Life During the Height of the HIV / AIDS Epidemic

GayCouples 019

Queerty profiled a moving photo series on gay couples during the HIV / AIDS era. The photo journalism project feels like a window into another era.

Here is the overview of the project from Queerty:

“In the Summer of 1986, photographer Sage Sohier set out to document the lives of gay and lesbian Americans in their homes. It was the peak of AIDS hysteria, and her intimate photos stood (and continue to stand) in humanizing defiance to the horrible rumors and fears circulating about the gay community in mainstream society.”

When I think about the 1980’s I am reminded of how impossible it felt to be gay growing up. These are the images I saw in the 1980’s as I was a child. I can’t imagine what these people experienced or felt.

Sometimes the most candid, intimate photos can say more than words ever could express.
