Under the San Francisco city hall rotunda last night, I watched two guys I consider mentors and father-figures get married. The couple met a decade ago and took their relationship from friendship to boyfriends and boyfriends to fiances only recently.

All it took to conduct the ceremony was a rabbi, four wooden sticks and a piece of cloth to create the chuppah, and a circle of family and friends. In an era of $50,000+ weddings, it was beautiful to watch the simplicity and genuine emotion of the night.

Let’s put all this context. It was a little over 10 years ago that San Francisco set the context for gay marriages across the country. To date, 26 states have legalized same-sex marriage.

To the grooms Mark and Mike, I say l’chaim. I say here’s to a lifetime of happiness.
