Pride – The Unlikely Union between Miners and LGBT Activists

maxresdefault

Coal miners and gay activists.

I saw Pride – a wonderful film – about these two marginalized communities joining forces. The movie follows the LGBTers who help miners during the lengthy strike of the National Union of Mineworkers in the summer of 1984.

The miners, while slow to accept this strange alliance, ended up becoming a powerful force in asserting gay and lesbian rights in Britain during the late 1980s.

Besides a wonderful date sitting next to me, the other thing that made the movie was one of the people – Mark Ashton. Mark was one of the founders of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and led the efforts to support the miners.

Pride is an impassioned and distinctly loveable movie. It’s not often a film can live up to rave reviews but Pride does that and more.

And if you want to see the real Mark Ashton check out this documentary.
