Seeing the World and Seeing Myself
Across 41 countries, 3 continents, and 30+ years I have spent my life traveling.
I thought change was what I thrived on. New environments, new people.
Then this morning, I came to a realization at my local coffee shop about what I truly want. As he was passing me my iced coffee, my favorite barista announced that he was leaving for UC Irvine.
I realized that I love routine. I liked being able to converse with the same people at the cafe, knowing where I am going to be each morning, and having that stability, dependability, and consistency.
Being adopted plays into this push to travel and desire for stability. We crave change in some ways and desire stability in other ways. We want the routine, but believe change is inevitable. So we change before the environment changes and try to retain control.
Socrates said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” However, as a precursor to change, you have to know why you are changing. Fundamentally, when you make the change there will be yourself at the core of the new environment.
Don’t worry. I still plan on traveling and blogging and exploring the world around me. There have been some life changing moments. But knowing what I truly want for my day-to-day is liberating.
Now it is time to finish my iced coffee. Have a brilliant morning.
