The Hunky Jesus Contest of Golden Gate Park

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are celebrating their 35th year of the “Hunky Jesus” contest. Every Easter, happy crowds attend the costume competition to see the sexy side of Jesus. The contest includes people who take the look of “our lord and savior” and transform it into “our lord and sexy.” Gay, straight, transgender… you name it… everyone participates.

Living in San Francisco for almost a decade, I have seen and witnessed things I definitely considered over-the-top and/or offensive. The “Hunky Jesus” contest is not one of them. This is the ultimate in post-Christian culture.

Founded in 1979, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have a vision statement that says, “We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.”
